Region-by-region compliance

For international sales the main legal buckets to map.

EU / EEA

  • GDPR privacy rights and business obligations.
  • Distance-selling withdrawal rights: generally 14 days, with specific rules for services and digital content.
  • Unfair commercial practices / pricing transparency: no misleading claims, fake reviews, or deceptive discounting.
  • Cookie consent for non-essential cookies in practice through ePrivacy-style rules and local implementations. In the UK, ICO guidance is explicit on this.

UK

  • UK GDPR + PECR for privacy, cookies, and direct marketing.
  • Consumer Contracts Regulations: generally 14-day cancellation rights for online sales, with different treatment for digital content and services.

California / U.S. states

  • CCPA/CPRA: rights to know, delete, correct, opt out of sale/sharing, and non-discrimination where thresholds are met.
  • Email marketing: CAN-SPAM rules apply to commercial email.
  • Subscriptions / autorenewals: if you offer memberships, build clear disclosures and easy cancellation, and get current state-by-state advice. The FTC announced a click-to-cancel rule in 2024 and later reopened rulemaking in 2026, so this area is moving.

Canada

  • PIPEDA for commercial handling of personal information.
  • CASL for commercial electronic messages, including email and some SMS / messaging.

Brazil

  • LGPD can apply to processing tied to offering goods or services in Brazil and regulates international transfers too.

Australia

Consumer guarantees apply to goods and services sold to consumers.
