The modern mystic - astrology

What astrology is

Astrology is the belief that the positions and movements of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars can reflect personality, relationships and life patterns.
It is often used as a tool for meaning, guidance and self-reflection.
Astrology is not the same as astronomy, which is the scientific study of space.

Astrology is the study of the symbolic relationship between the movements of the planets and life here on Earth. It offers insight into personality, emotions, relationships, timing and life themes, helping you better understand yourself and the energies surrounding you. At The Modern Mystic, astrology is approached as a tool for reflection, guidance and deeper self-awareness.

Where astrology started

Astrology began thousands of years ago in the ancient world.
Some of the earliest forms came from Mesopotamia, especially Babylon, where people studied the sky and linked celestial events to life on Earth.
It later developed further in ancient Egypt, Greece, India, China and the Islamic world.

How astrology has evolved

Astrology has changed over time as different cultures added their own ideas, symbols and systems.
The zodiac signs used in much of Western astrology were shaped strongly by Greek thought.
Over the centuries, astrology moved from royal courts and religious traditions into books, newspapers, popular culture and online platforms.
Today, many people use astrology less as prediction and more as a way to explore identity, emotions and personal growth.

Birth Charts and Natal Charts

A birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a personalised map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Created using your birth date, time and location, it reveals the placement of the Sun, Moon, planets and houses in your chart. This powerful blueprint offers insight into your personality, strengths, challenges, relationships and life path.

Sun, Moon and Rising Signs

Your Sun, Moon and Rising signs are the three most important parts of your birth chart. Your Sun sign reflects your core identity and purpose, your Moon sign reveals your emotions and inner world, and your Rising sign shows how you appear to others and move through life. Together, they create a deeper and more personal picture than your star sign alone.

Zodiac Signs Explained

The 12 zodiac signs each carry their own unique energy, qualities and symbolism. From fiery Aries to dreamy Pisces, every sign expresses itself in a different way and influences how we think, feel, communicate and connect. This section explores the meaning of each zodiac sign and how these energies appear in your chart.

In astrology, star signs are the 12 sections of the zodiac. The zodiac is a belt of sky that the Sun, Moon and planets appear to move through over the course of the year.

Your star sign usually means your Sun sign. That is the zodiac sign the Sun was in when you were born. So if someone says, “I’m a Leo,” they usually mean the Sun was in Leo on their birth date.

The reason signs are tied to dates is that, in Western astrology, the year is divided into 12 zodiac periods. Those date ranges are the usual “star sign dates” you see in horoscopes. Some systems, like sidereal astrology, calculate the signs differently, so a person’s sign can sometimes vary depending on the tradition being used.

Each sign is linked to certain themes, traits and ways of expressing energy. For example, astrology describes Aries as direct and bold, Taurus as steady and grounded, Gemini as curious and communicative, and so on through all 12 signs.

Star sign element breakdown:

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

In simple terms star signs work by assigning meaning to the zodiac sign a planet was in when you were born, with your main “star sign” being your Sun sign. Astrology then combines all the signs and planets in your birth chart to create a fuller interpretation.

What the star signs do

The signs are said to do:

  • They give a style or flavour to energy.
  • The planet shows what is acting.
  • The sign shows how it acts.
  • The house shows where in life it acts.

So:

  • Venus in Libra might be read as love expressed in a balanced, diplomatic way.
  • Mars in Capricorn might be read as drive expressed in a disciplined, practical way.

Full birth charts

Your Sun sign is only one part of astrology. A full birth chart also looks at:

  • your Moon sign for emotions and inner life
  • your Rising sign for first impressions and outward style
  • the other planets and where they were at your birth
  • the angles between them, called aspects

Insights from a full birth chart They show why two people with the same star sign can seem very different. They may share a Sun sign, but have different Moon signs, Rising signs and planetary placements.

Aspects are the angles between planets, showing how those energies interact with one another. Together, houses and aspects add depth to your chart and reveal the patterns, themes and dynamics that shape your journey.
